Wound, Ostomy and Continence Care

For people having bladder cancer surgery, taking care of a stoma or learning how to manage continence is an important part of recovery. To help with this, our program offers a virtual education session led by Registered Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Care Nurses (NSWOC) from Vancouver Coastal Health.

This is a one and a half hour online group session for patients who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer and are planning to have their bladder removed (cystectomy) with a urinary diversion. The session is led by an NSWOC nurse who will talk about what to expect before and after surgery, how to care for different types of urinary diversions, and what to expect in the longer term.

Below are some instructive video on most frequent urinary diversion:

For patients not from Vancouver General Hospital who wish to meet with a WOCN before their planned pre-operative visit (and after attending our educative session), we recommend asking your physician to arrange an appointment with a WOCN at your hospital.
